Savanuck, a military journalist and Army staff sergeant, was covering C Troop of the 3rd Squadron, 5th Armored Cavalry Regiment, when it came under attack April 18, 1969, near Cam Lo, in Quang Tri province. During the battle, he put down his camera to assist a wounded soldier and was killed by enemy gunfire. The library at the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Md., is named after him, along with an annual military journalism award and Post 888 of the Jewish War Veterans
