Dak To, South Vietnam, June 11, 1966: Capt. William Carpenter, right, commander of the 101st Airborne Division's C Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Regiment, talks about his company's recent close call in escaping from near-encirclement by North Vietnamese forces. Carpenter, a football All-American and team captain at West Point, called for a napalm strike on his own position that enabled his troops to set up a defensive perimeter and eventually break free. His actions earned him his second Silver Star of the war. Carpenter eventually turned down pro football offers and made the military his career; he retired as a general officer. ©Stars and Stripes, Jack Baird
